The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says all is set for Saturday’s parliamentary primaries.
It will hold the polls in 157 constituencies. In 39 constituencies, incumbent MPs and other aspirants are going unopposed.
The primaries have been suspended in some five constituencies including Asawase and Ellembelle, whilst the party is yet to open nominations in 74 constituencies.
The NDC’s Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, told Citi News all arrangements are in place for an incident-free election.
“We have deployed ballot papers to all the regions under security guards and when the papers arrive in the regions, they are escorted to the regional and district election offices and they are checked and subsequently to the police armory where they are kept until Saturday. We are done with all the registers, we did an exhibition of the registers for the first time and after the exhibition, anybody who had issues came and they went on with either a change of name or corrections.”
No phones near voting booths – NDC warns agents ahead of primaries
Agents of the various parliamentary aspirants will not be allowed to carry phones near booths at the centres during the NDC’s primaries on Saturday, August 24, 2019.
The voters will also not be allowed to carry phones when going to vote.
The centres are also supposed to be campaign free zones, the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia had warned.
“No agent shall be allowed to carry mobile phones to the booth. If you are a party agent, keep the phones away. We don’t want you to have the opportunity to take pictures, just like the way somebody takes pictures while voting and circulates it on Whatsapp. At the same time, no voter will be allowed to carry a mobile phone to the polling booth.”
“It is prohibited for you to be canvasing for votes. No pictures or an effigy or parliamentary aspirants shall be allowed within 500 metres of the voting centre. So don’t approach the voting centre in the T-shirt of your favoured aspirant.”
